The Arri Alexa camera was designed to marry the worlds of film and digital acquisition and truly deserves to be called a digital cinema camera. ARRI has over 100 years of experience making high quality lenses, accessories and camera bodies and has used all of that expertise to deliver a camera system that combines the ruggedness and reliability of 35mm film camera bodies with the ease of use and practicality of a digital workflow. Most importantly, the camera delivers stunning film-like images due to a massive dynamic range that is tweaked to deliver natural highlight roll-offs and crisp blacks.

Under the hood, the camera boasts a 3.5K sensor capable of sending 12bit Arriraw to an external recorder or 1920x1080 ProRes to SXS cards. This flexibility in workflows means the camera can be used on the biggest of features or the smallest of webisodes with a workflow that makes sense for either type of project. The camera also has a native ISO of 800, making it great in low light and adding even more to the practicality factor.

The Alexa is not perfect by any means; one major drawback is the lack of high speed recording in the base package, something taken for granted with film cameras. Another consideration is that the ALEXA is essentially a 2K camera. With that in mind, for effects work or keying you might be better off renting another camera.

The 4K Blackmagic Production Camera is an EF Mount Ultra HD 4K capable camera.

After an extra long wait, Blackmagic finally released the 4K Blackmagic Camera and it has not disappointed. From the outside it may not look much different from the original Blackmagic Cinema Camera, but improvements include higher resolution and a global shutter.

Unbutton your high-waist pants, crack open a PBR, and get ready to geek out because the 4K BMPC has some seriously good specs for the price.

We’ll start with the 4K Blackmagic’s recording capabilities. This little guy records Ultra HD 4K (3840x2160) and 1080HD in visually lossless compressed CinemaDNG RAW and ProRes 422 (HQ) files. Blackmagic uses a global shutter in this camera so you won’t get rolling shutter artifacts like you would with a CMOS sensor.

Not only does the Blackmagic 4K Production Camera’s Super 35mm sensor offer impressive resolution, but it also gives you 12 stops of dynamic range. Having this large amount of dynamic range allows the camera to capture more information so you have greater flexibility in post.

As far as media goes, the 4K BMPC records to standard 2.5” SSDs. While you can playback directly from the camera, it is important to remember that you can not format the cards in camera.

The Canon 5D Mark II is a DSLR available for rental at Stray Angel Films.

The 5D Mark II was the original DSLR that shook up the digital film world. It enabled shooters to use a camera that is low-light sensitive, large depth of field, compact, and budget friendly.

Canon’s 5D Mark II has a stunning 21.1 megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor with DIGIC 4 Image Processor. The camera also has a vast range of ISO from 100-6400. The camera takes beautiful, high resolution photos as well as 1920x1080 Full HD video.

If renting a 5D Mark II, you will probably want to add some accessories as the camera was not really designed for video. Check the “Suggested Accessories” section below for things like EVFs and Beachtek Adapters.

The OConnor Ultimate 2575D Fluid Head is a fluid head with a Mitchell Ball Base and Tiedown that supports high payload cameras rendering it suitable for cine style shooting.

Lightweight at 22.6 lb (10.4 kg), the fluid head sustains a heavy payload up to 90 lb (40.8 kg) with greater drag. Conveniently located controls (pan and tilt brakes) at camera operator's side (left side) of the platform enable ease of operation and rapid familiarity. The platform also houses dual scales for counterbalance, and sports 4 handle rosettes that allow left or right hand operation as well as mounting from the front or rear. An intelligently placed, soft handrest enhances the Ultimate 2575D Fluid Head's ergonomic design. You can achieve rapid pan movements owing to the fluid drag system that allows the camera to move from one position to other very quickly and recover without any spring back.

The Mitchell Ball Base provides for high mobility and is secured in place by the Mitchell Tiedown. A single-touch, Euro-style platform release lever allows you to disengage the safety catch and open the lever effortlessly, providing high mobility to deal with location changes in the field.

You can achieve sinusoidal counterbalance and stepless pan and tilt drag using the Ultimate 2575D Fluid Head. A collapsible counterbalance crank handle in tandem with a numerical readout allows for easy counterbalancing of the payload. Setting up the camera system in low-light conditions is simple with the illuminated level bubble.

Ultimate Gimbal Support 

The Armor-Man 2 is designed to work with leading 3-axis gimbal stabilizers such as the Tilta Gravity, DJI Ronin and the Freefly MoVI. The Armor-Man 2 is capable of supporting a wide range of gimbal camera set ups. 

Quick Release Arms 

With an innovated quick-release system each support armis quickly snapped into the support vest. Each arm features two spring loaded support sections. The tension of each spring section can be adjusted through knobs located along each joint. When not in use, each arm can be swiveled down into resting position. Simply by pulling on the release cord and locking each arm into place along the hips of the operator. 

Swivel Hand Grip Support 

Adjustable swivel hand grip supports are located at the end of each arm. Each gimbal hand grip rests inside the support allowing the operator to keep their arms free for any hands on camera adjustments. They also provide support without limiting the operator's range of movement. 

Integrated Battery Plate 

The vest comes standard with a V-Mount battery plate, with a 4-Pin female Lemo power connection socket. Through here the operator can run power directly to the gimbal through the right support arm with features several cable clamps. The Armor-Man 2 is also available in Gold mount through special order. 

Custom Cut Foam Hard Case 

The Armor-Man 2 comes protected inside a custom cut weatherproof travel hard case with a retractable handle, a pair of wheels and 4 quick-release latches.

Wide Camera/Lens Compatibility

The Auto Configuration feature means the Ronin can adapt to a range of camera sizes from lightweight mirrorless models up to cinema cameras. It is suitable for payloads up to 16 pounds.

SmoothTrack Control

SmoothTrack gives a single gimbal operator the ability to translate their tilt and pan movements of the gimbal into smooth and stabilized movements of the camera's angle. This is designed to make framing of broad wide-angle scenes or even shooting in close quarters much easier during single gimbal operator use.

Auto Configuration

After balancing the camera with a simple tap of the ATS (Auto Tune Stability) button, Ronin will be automatically tuned for the mass and weight distribution of your camera rig. The gimbal will intelligently adjust parameters based on the camera rig's weight and independently adjust each of the three axes until an optimal setting is found.

Three Operation Modes

Upright Operation Mode

Upright Mode allows the gimbal to be flipped over so the camera can be operated closer to eye level without straining to lift the gimbal. This can be used in various situations, such mounting on the top of the vehicle.

Underslung (Suspended) Operation Mode

Suspended Operation Mode is the standard operation mode for Ronin. Low slung, close to the ground, or simply holding the gimbal in front of you offers stabilized handheld footage. This mode would also be used when mounted the gimbal on a flying platform such as a multirotor RC helicopter.

Briefcase Mode

When a slimmer gimbal profile is needed - such as when moving through doorways or narrow paths - Briefcase Mode is ideal. It allows the gimbal to be held to the side and close to the legs, much like a briefcase.

Second Operator Control

A second operator transmitter (radio controller) is included with the package. Featuring the form factor of an RC aircraft radio controller, the 2.4 GHz Ronin transmitter provides pan and tilt control as well user-assignable speed settings and operation modes via two toggle switches. If you would rather use a third-party transmitter a D-bus port is provided.

Optional Joystick Pan/Tilt

Single thumb control is possible for the Ronin Handheld Gimbal System. These Pan and Tilt movements are controlled via the optional joystick attachment, available separately. Additionally, SmoothTrack Mode can be turned on or off using the joystick interface.

Assistant Software for Mobile and Windows

A mobile device or computer to run the Assistant Software is essential. It is available for select iOS mobile devices and Windows computers. With the software you can:

Tool-Free Adjustment

Dual 15mm (LWS) rods are incorporated for adding follow focuses or matte boxes. Meanwhile top bar accessory mounts let you attach field monitors, lights, microphones, recorders, and other "camera-mounted" accessories.

Quick Release Smart Battery

Providing an estimated 4 hours of run time (depending on use), the proprietary Ronin battery system is designed for easy changes in the field and charges using a dedicated charger that is included. The batteries feature indicators so remaining power can be checked directly on the battery itself. Unlike may lithium-polymer batteries, with the Ronin Smart Battery, overcharge and over depletion protection is built-in, as is individual battery cell charge balancing.

Power Distribution Box

Two regulated 12V DC PowerTaps, one 500mAh type A female USB connector, and also a connection point for the DJI Lightbridge Long Range HD Video Downlink are provided. These provide power connection for various accessories, including motorized follow focus systems, video transmitters, and more - all while keeping the wiring to a minimum.

The Teradek Bolt Pro -734 Multicast Wireless Transmission System is a latency-free wireless transmission system that sends 4:2:2, 1080p60 video at up to 300ft. This Bolt Pro system comes in a set of 1 transmitter and 4 receivers. The transmitter features a loop through SD/HD/3G-SDI output, so you can transmit video, and send the output from the camera to a monitor or deck. The transmitter features an internal battery, that can run the unit for up to 60 minutes, and it features 4-LED indicator lights that indicate battery level.

The Bolt Pro system is suitable for exterior and interior shoots, and it features Dynamic Frequency Selection that allows it adjust the frequency bands it is using in real time to avoid interference. This Bolt Pro comes with 4 receivers that feature 2 x SD/HD/3G-SDI outputs, however it can also transmit to a Bolt receiver that features an HDMI output, allowing you to take SDI in, transmit, and output via HDMI or SDI depending on the type of receiver you are using. You can also mix and match SDI & HDMI receiver units, up to a total of 4.

The Cube 555 includes all the features of the original Cube such as a compact aluminum chassis and comprehensive transport protocol support like RTP/RTSP/RTMP/MPEG-TS. The OLED display enables users to rapidly change and review the settings of their unit in addition to providing real-time feedback for filenames, recording status, and wireless connectivity. No longer are computers or iPads needed for configuration; every feature is a simple click away. 

The built-in Li-ion battery gives users up to 90 minutes of runtime, which allows for seamless battery swapping or quick broadcasts. The battery can also be charged from an AC adapter or even a suitable external battery such as an Anton Bauer. The new MIMO access point feature improves wireless performance and enables special features such as wireless camera control for devices without a Wi-Fi capability built in, and ensures improved connectivity from an iPad or Android tablets. Also, a headphone output is integrated for immediate audio monitoring. 

The micro SD slot enables Cube to save on-board proxy recordings in real time. The recorded files (.mov or .mp4) are automatically synced with your proxy server over Wi-Fi or cellular connections. ACD301RF Master Radio Slate

Due to the increased use of record run timecode when recording sound on DAT recorders, and the need to display this code in front of the camera, Ambient has developed the 'Master Radio Slate'.

This slate has all the features of the standard Master slate, but has a built-in UHF telemetry receiver and separate, very small transceiver to attach to the timecode source or recorder. Range is typically 50 metres, but in certain circumstances, can be much greater.

The slate also has a slip-on writing sleeve (280mm wide) which gives the slate a wide screen format, and additional writing space. The sleeve is easily removed for close up shots. A further useful feature is a 'flash on close' option to aid Telecine syncing.
